Project

We have developed a method for recontextualizng the moving image. We’re beginning to share our experiments (known as Z-projections or simply Zs) at the ZZZ Browser.  In brief, we’re selecting cinema, television, and video games, and visualizing their structure by “slicing” their frames.

This project is still very much in an alpha-beta-gamma mode.  However, we are currently producing large comparative studies and will begin to curate the results at the ZZZ Blog later this year with an exhibition to follow.

Here are some examples of ZZZ output—

ZZZ projection: “Science Friction” by Stan Vanderbeek (1959)
ZZZ projection montage: “Science Friction” by Stan Vanderbeek (1959)

Projections expose the compositional structure of Stan Vanderbeek's abstract animation classic, "Science Friction"

ZZZ maximum keyframe: Animal Collective's “My Girls” by Jon Vermilyea (2009)
ZZZ maximum projection: Animal Collective's “My Girls” by Jon Vermilyea (2009)

An averaging and projection emphasize the limited palette and equal-length scenes of Animal Collective's “My Girls”

ZZZ maximum projection: “Hoi” for Amiga (1992)

This projection provides a concise mapping of the level design of an early video game (“Hoi” for Amiga)

LA Game Space

Along with our collaborators, we’re starting the LA Game Space, a non-profit lab for game development, research, and culture.

me+Sarah are the creative directors of the Space.  We’ll be constructing a massive, immersive arcade for indie games, curating exhibitions of game design, and planning events including micromusic shows and screenings.

In Fall 2009, we collaborated with Attract Mode, Dutycycle, and Giant Robot to organize a West coast micromusic tour called Data Beez.  Micromusic (aka “chip music”) is created using game systems and their sound chips.

In addition to creating the tour, me+Sarah performed live visuals along the way.  Here is our performance of “Flying” with Minusbaby:

Also, there’s a nice-wrap at Gamasutra.  We’ll see you at Data Beez 2!
